IGS SLM and Network Upgrades and Downtime

Dear IGS Community,

The IGS Central Bureau is pleased to announce a new and improved IGS Site Log Manager (SLM 2.0) and IGS Network visualization system (Network 2.0). Last year, the CB identified issues in the current Site Log Manager and Network page, which included outdated technology that was soon to be deprecated and limited support for possible new features needed. As a result of research on new technologies and extensive user interviews/testing, the CB was able to develop the necessary improvements for each system. For a list of changes and improvements, please visit: https://igs.org/news/slm-network-upgrades-downtime

IMPORTANT

Please note, the IGS SLM and Network will not be available during the upgrade period, starting on 31 March 2023 16:00 UTC, and ending on 3 April 2023 at 16:00 UTC. All other IGS websites, such as https://igs.org and https://files.igs.org, are expected to remain available throughout the transition.

We will send an announcement to confirm when these resources are available again by IGSmail and via social media on twitter (https://twitter.com/igsorg).

Existing SLM Users

For existing SLM users, new passwords are required in all cases for SLM 2.0;  your old SLM password will no longer be valid and if you reset your password to access the SLM 2.0 DEMO, that password will also no longer be valid. On the day of launch you will receive a password reset email to reset your password. You can also visit the SLM 2.0 page to initiate your password update by clicking the “Forgot Password?” link, once the official release is in place.

Previewing the system improvements prior to release

To preview the new systems prior to release, please visit the DEMO links below:

  • Network 2.0 () – Improvements are ongoing
  • SLM 2.0 (https://slmdemo.igs.org) – This system can only be previewed by station operators. Please note this is just a TESTING SANDBOX ENVIRONMENT. Any changes made here will be DELETED upon transition and it is NOT for official submission of site logs. If any site log submissions need to be made, please continue to use slm.igs.org.
    • Existing SLM Users – If you are an existing SLM user, please be sure to reset your password using the Forgot Password link. Your old password can no longer be used in this new system.
    • New SLM Users – If you are new to the SLM, please let us know so we can register an account for you to test.

We appreciate any and all feedback. To report feedback, bugs, or issues for both the SLM 2.0 and Network 2.0, please report it on our GitHub repository: https://github.com/International-GNSS-Service/SLM/issues

If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to us.

Best Regards,
International GNSS Service Central Bureau

List of Improvements

  • New and improved user interface – designed a clean, modern interface that better shows key items for the user, so that they can get to their destination or complete their actions with ease, as well as restructured sections/pages for a more streamlined flow between features
  • Using the latest technology – developed the new system with a more robust programming language and database to allow for sustainability and make way for future features such as GeodesyML, interoperability, and command-line API
  • Improved Editing – developed easy to edit form fields with the ability to edit past sections
  • Improved Validation – developed better validation checks when a user adds or edits station metadata to ensure the station metadata is as accurate as possible
  • New Alerts/Notifications – created a new alert/notifications system where users will able to view any validation errors or notes from the SLM admin/moderator
  • New List/Map View – created a new and improved station list to view, search, sort, and filter through stations, and be able to view the station locations on an interactive 3D global map
  • Open Source – the new SLM is open source software issued under the MIT license. It is free to use and has a no-fork architecture that allows significant adaptations without the need to change core code. We welcome contributions!
  • Stronger Validation – stronger validation coupled with a more strongly typed data model will increase the quality and accuracy of site log information over time.

For a full list of improvements, visit SLM Demo Help (must be an SLM user to access).

  • Using the latest technology – developed the new network system with the same programming language and database as the SLM for better integration between the two systems and better sustainability
  • New and improved layout – restructured the network system components and combined them into a fullscreen, single page layout where users can view all the components all in one place and be able to adjust the width and height of each component.
  • New and improved Interactive Map – using a robust mapping system, Mapbox GL JS, developed a new interactive map that provides clearer vector tiles, cohesive map layers, multiple different map projections, the ability to “fly” between stations, and high-resolution map exporting
  • New customizable station list/table – developed a station list/table that has similar sorting and filtering capabilities, but now has the ability to configure column visibility, select multiple stations to be displayed on the interactive map, easily export the table and their selections, and save any table customizations

Full list of improvements coming soon.
